Whether you’re new to foundation funding or looking to clarify specific processes, we’re here to help. Below are answers to some of the most frequent questions about working with Mizzou’s Foundation Relations team and how we can help support your work with private funders.
What is a private foundation?
Private foundations are nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3) charities) managed by trustees or a board of directors. At Mizzou, the Foundation Relations team works with private foundations, as well as public charities, charitable LLCs, community foundations and professional or membership organizations.
When should I contact the Foundation Relations team?
Reach out anytime you have questions about private funding or if you’d like to explore potential opportunities. We’re here to help.
Am I required to work with the Foundation Relations team?
We strongly encourage you to contact us before approaching a foundation. There may be information we can share that will increase your success. There is a list of priority foundations, and the Foundation Relations team has a role when working with those organizations.
What are priority foundations?
Priority foundations are those with relationships managed centrally by Mizzou Advancement. We coordinate activities and contacts with these funders based on their preferences, which may include limiting the number of applications or requesting a single point of contact. Before initiating outreach, please review our list of priority foundations.
How is Foundation Relations different from Sponsored Programs Administration?
Foundation Relations focuses on building relationships and securing support from private foundations and charitable donors. We use our experience and expertise to help faculty navigate all aspects of the grant cycle and grow philanthropic support across the university.
Sponsored Programs Administration oversees external grants and contracts, also known as sponsored projects, awarded to the Curators of the University of Missouri.
Is Mizzou a 501(c)(3)?
No, Mizzou is not a 501(c)(3). However, most foundations accept our tax-exempt status. If a funder specifically requires 501(c)(3) status, please contact us. We’re happy to assist.
