Working with Foundation Relations

No two projects — or funders — are alike. That’s why Foundation Relations offers personalized support to faculty and staff pursuing foundation funding. We collaborate closely with your research administration office to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach.

Here’s what to expect when you connect with us:

  • Initial Contact: Whether you complete the Find Prospects Research Request or email us, a team member will acknowledge your inquiry and outline next steps.
  • Introductory Meeting: You’ll be invited to a brief meeting or call to discuss your concept, potential funding opportunities and how Foundation Relations can support your efforts.
  • Strategic Guidance: Based on our conversation, we’ll help you chart a clear path forward. This may include identifying prospective funders, initiating contact with foundations or refining your concept or proposal. 
  • Ongoing Support: Our team remains available beyond the initial submission. We’ll keep your project statement on file and proactively watch for new funding opportunities and RFPs. When they arise, we’ll help tailor your materials, revise or resubmit proposals, and continue building relationships with potential funders.

Proposal Development

Some of our proposal development services include:

  • Identifying potential funders for faculty pursuing discrete, innovative projects.
  • Analyzing guidelines and evaluating how your project or program aligns with a funder’s mission.
  • Crafting a strong, tailored case for support for each funder.
  • Connecting you with program officers for meaningful conversations.
  • Partnering with faculty and research administration teams to create strategic, compelling letters of intent and proposals.

Post-Award Funder Engagement

While private foundations may have fewer formal reporting requirements than public funders, expectations for impact and communication remain high. The Foundation Relations team works closely with principal investigators and research administrators to ensure funders receive timely updates and meaningful thanks, laying the groundwork for future support.

After your award, we:

  • Coordinate personalized acknowledgment letters from university leadership.
  • Issue reminders for upcoming reporting deadlines.
  • Help develop compelling reports that showcase your project’s impact.
  • Share success stories and updates with foundations during and after the grant period.
  • Communicate with foundations about changes to scope, timeline or budget.
  • Ensure any announcements or public recognition outlined in the grant agreement are arranged.
